Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules are strictly adhered to in ordering drug and/or alcohol tests subsequent to accidents. They call for employers to administer alcohol testing as soon as feasible; best practice is within two hours, and these tests should be done no later than eight hours from the time an accident occurred. The maximum elapsed time for a post-accident FMCSA drug exam is 32 hours.

Both lab-based and instant exams are available, with panels that include hair, saliva, and urine. Other testing services include breath alcohol, lift tests, physicals (both DOT and non-DOT), and wellness. Lab results have an average disclosure time of 48 hours.
